The name U. subquadripara has often been applied to material in Florida (e.g. FNA, vol. 25), its distinction from U. distachya has oft been questioned. Sosef (2016) chose to recognize only U. distachya, with the other as synonym, observing "an almost continuous grade" between the alleged forms.

Based on morphology this species was moved to Urochloa by Webster (1987) which is supported by DNA studies (Salariato et al. 2010; Delfini et al. 2023; Masters et al. 2024). This species is often placed in the genus Megathyrsus (Simon & Jacobs 2003), which is relatively deeply nested in a broader Urochloa clade. Webster (1987: 242) wrote "The compound branching pattern of the primary branches is the only basis for placing this species in Panicum. It has numerous spikelet, vegetative and anatomical characteristics in common with other species of Urochloa (as defined here) and its transfer is taxonomically essential."
