This species was once known as Reimarochloa oligostachya, but the genus Reimarochloa has since been found to be part of Paspalum (Scataglini et al. 2014).

According to de Oliveira & Montenegro Valls (2008), this species should take the earlier name P. lepton. The specific epithet was originally published as P. leptos but the spelling often has been changed to P. lepton. This species may also be able to hybridize with P. plicatulum (Costa Huber 2015).

This grass is believed to have been inadvertenly introduced to the Pensacola area from Argentina before 1926, when the Perdido Wharf was destroyed, and soon thereafter widely cultivated (Finlayson 1941; Burton 1967; Campbell 2016).
