Description Locally common; generally >5 stems ascending radially from rootstock; flowers rose-magenta, rarely pale pink, occasionally with darker spot at base of petals; anthers white; flowers open about noon and before.
Habitat Along powerline right-of-way; deep well-drained silica sand; sand prairie with Dichanthelium, Commelina erecta, Opuntia compressa, Stipa spartea, Tephrosia virginiana.

Habitat N side of private road at N side of large coal strip mining area; deep sand, probably calcareous, Kankakee Sand Areas; dry-mesic sand prairie, with Schizachyrium, Andropogon gerardii, Sorghastrum nutans, Lespedeza capitata, Opuntia humifusa, Helianthus occidentalis, Amorpha canescens, Euphorbia corollata.
