This plant has been identified in archaeological remains in Florida suggesting indigenous cultivation and use (Hutchinson et al. 2016). American cultivars are apparently derived from African lineages, and perhaps were first introduced to the Americas from Africa by oceanic currents. Wild American populations may have gone extinct long ago and only cultivated strains persisted in the Americas (Kistler et al. 2014).
