Some individuals experience irritation and allergic reactions to mango, probably due to its heptadecadienyl-resorcinol content, a polyketide and fatty acid derivative similar to urushiol in poison ivy (Oka et al. 2004).

This species contains certain types of urushiols which may be toxic to some persons exposed to the plant (Gross et al. 1975). In the Bahamas, tests on 20 volunteers found varying degrees of sensitivity, with one developing a severe rash, one a severe local erythematous reaction, 12 developed papules, and six were unaffected (Jackson 1946). Reactions to the toxins may appear a few days after exposure.

This species was purposely introduced into Florida possibly around 1898 (Williams et al. 2005). As an invasive species, biological control agents are being sought (Wheeler et al. 2017), with two proposed for use: Calophya latiforceps and Pseudophilothrips ichini. This plant contains cardanol, a molecule similar to urushiols that can be irritating to some persons exposed to it (Morton 1978; Stahl et al. 1983). The specific epithet has been determined to appropriately be "terebinthifolia" in accord with a feminine genus, although "terebinthifolius" has been used frequently (Zona 2015).
