Many specimens identified as this species are likely M. grossum (Possley & Howell 2015). Distinctive characters of M. scolopendria may be its slender rhizome (2-3 mm wide when dry) and the apex of the rhizome scales being dark brown. Leaves usually have 1-5 pairs of lobes and lack a sweet smell when fresh (Possley & Howell 2015).
