OAK MISTLETOE
**
This mistletoe can live off a wide variety of host trees (e.g. see Overlease & Overlease 2011). In Florida, they are frequently found on species of the red oak group (Quercus sect. Lobatae) and have also been documented on the white oak group (Q. sect. Quercus) and several other genera, such as Acer, Carya, Celtis, Forestiera, Fraxinus, Liquidambar, Nyssa, and Ulmus. This species produces phoratoxin, a toxic protein (Samuelsson & Ekblad 1967). Reviews of human exposures to the plant have generally reported only mild toxicity (Hall et al. 1986; Spiller et al. 1996; Krenzelok et al. 1997; Evens & Stellpflug 2012).
