Florida material is here maintained under S. havanensis s.lat. following Holmes (in FNA, vol. 26). Smilax gracilior was stated to be endemic to Cuba and the Bahamas, characterized by chartaceous leaves with 3-5(-7) thin primary veins (Ferrufino-Acosta 2010), but simultaneously Florida specimens were annotated as S. gracilior.
