In FNA (vol. 7), Cakile constricta is treated as a distinct species and three varieties of C. lanceolata are recognized, all occurring in Florida. From Rodman (1974), "Cakile constricta is intermediate between C. edentula to the north and C. lanceolata to the south". Cakile constricta was mapped from central Florida northward and C. lanceolata from central Florida southward (Rodman 1974).
