This treatment may include plants referred to as N. pubescens, N. rubra, or hybrids thereof. Plants with crimson-red petals have been referred to as N. rubra, possibly a hybrid of N. lotus and N. pubescens. It is unclear how N. lotus (African) and N. pubescens (Asian) can be unequivocally distinguished; possibly N. pubescens has pinker petals more often (Hooker 1875; Wiersema 1982; Verdcourt 1989; Sharma et al. 1993; La-ongsri et al. 2009; Dkhar et al. 2010, 2013; Guruge et al. 2016).
