Characteristics
Gymnosperms
Taxus floridana Nutt. ex Chapm.
FLORIDA YEW
**
Numerous fatalities have occurred from ingestion of species of the genus Taxus. Taxus floridana contains taxine B (Poupat et al. 2000), an alkaloid implicated as a primary toxin in Taxus poisonings and deaths. The chemotherapeutic terpenoid paclitaxel and related compounds can be found in Taxus floridana, though this species is not a relevant source for medicine (Rao et al. 1996).
