Imperata brasiliensis

Family:POACEAE
Species:Imperata brasiliensis Trin.
Common Name:BRAZILIAN SATINTAIL
Plant Notes:Genetic analyses by Burrell et al. (2015) found that sampled populations from Collier and Miami-Dade County were distinct from those sampled from the rest of Florida, consistent with I. brasiliensis being a separate species (Gabel 1982). Some authors have placed it as a synonym of I. cylindrica (Lucardi et al. 2014; Hall 2019). The earliest records of I. brasliensis in south Florida may be the Chapman specimens (FLAS, NY), probably from the 1840s. Specimens often show charring in Florida, apparently preferring pyrogenic communities and having a flowering response to fire or cutting.
