Habitat:In thin woods below Pinus taeda, Acer rubrum, Liquidambar, with considerable Myrica cerifera, Lyonia lucida, Gaylussacia, Clethra; fairly damp ground.

Description:Low shrubs, scarcely over 1 m tall, frequently much-branched with spreading branches; some plants relatively easily unearthed with rootstocks, otherwise solidly seated in loamy sand; leaves variably shiny dark green, rugose above, abundantly short-pubescent below, the older leaves with a "dirtier" look on the lower surface; acorns variable, the largest (=most well developed?) gun-metal blue to blackish, and scurfy; acorns fairly hard to find, as many have already fallen. Locally abundant.
