Description:Acorns dark commonly blackish, nearly always in the uppermost branches; locally abundant and crowded shrub, mostly about 1 m, tall, some individuals are over 2 m, tall; plants generally much-branched, the branches stiff. 
Habitat:Flatwoods below Pinus palustris, Q. virginiana, Q. laevis, Q. hemisphaerica, Liquidambar, and with Smilax pumila, Indigofera caroliniana, Myrica cerifera, Sassafras albidum, Persea borbonia (Symplocos tinctoria, Serenoa repens both very abundant, less so are Hamamelis virginiana, Diospyros virgininiana).
