Description:Occasional small tree 4-8 m tall, low branched; flowers pale green, pendulous, emerging with leaves; bark pale grey, smooth. 
Habitat:Moist humus over gneissic granite bedrock and talus, N facing slopes of lower creek near spring; mesic forest, seeps, and creek terrace, with Quercus spp., Pinus spp., Carpinus, Xanthorhiza, Alnus, Halesia, Fagus; shaded.
