**
Opuntia stricta is here treated in the wide sense. Various segregates may be recognized. Opuntia dillenii has more tuberculate cladodes usually with more spines, often curved, strongly flattened at the base and often dark brown to black at the lower half. Opuntia stricta has subentire cladodes usually with fewer spines, round or slightly flattened at the base.
