Genus Notes:The Florida oaks fall into two sections of subgenus Quercus: sect. Lobatae (the red oaks) and sect. Quercus (the white oaks). Red oaks typically have more acute-tipped buds, awned or bristled leaf blades, and more bitter or astringent acorns that mature in the second year after flowering. White oaks typically have more obtuse buds, leaf blades without awns or bristles, and sweeter acorns maturing in one year. The red oaks include Q. arkansana, Q. falcata, Q. incana, Q. inopina, Q. laevis, Q. laurifolia, Q. marilandica, Q. myrtifolia, Q. nigra, Q. pagoda, Q. phellos, Q. pumila, Q. shumardii, and Q. velutina. The white oaks include Q. alba, Q. austrina, Q. chapmanii, Q. geminata, Q. lyrata, Q. margarettae, Q. michauxii, Q. minima, Q. muehlenbergii, Q. prinoides, Q. stellata, and Q. virginiana.
