This species is characterized by its strongly vining habit, stems usually obliquely retrorsely hispid to strigose, and relatively large flowers. This name had recently been misapplied to mostly prostrate plants (Ward & Hall 2004; Wunderlin & Hansen 2011), currently referred to here as G. purshii (Franck 2017).

Epitypified by Franck, PhytoKeys 85: 19. 2017.
