Vitis cinerea (Engelm.)Engelm. ex Millardet var. floridana Munson
FLORIDA GRAPE
**
DNA work provides ample support to recognize this taxon as the species V. simpsonii, distinct from V. cinerea (Wen et al. 2018; Zecca et al. 2020, 2022; Talavera et al. 2023). This taxon can be difficult to separate from V. aestivalis. Vitis aestivalis is distinguished by its abaxially glaucous leaf blades, more glaucous berries 8-20 mm wide, terete branchlets that are less evenly pubescent, preference for drier habitats, and flowering Apr-Jun vs. V. cinerea with leaf blades not glaucous abaxially, berries not or slightly glaucous 4-8 mm wide, angled branchlets, preference for wetter habitats, and flowering May-Jun (see Moore & Wen in FNA, vol. 12). Several other DNA analyses have looked at various samples of V. aestivalis and V. cinerea (Miller et al. 2013; Wan et al. 2013; Klein et al. 2018).
