The presumed native region of S. capsicoides is Brazil and probably introduced to Florida (FNA, vol. 14). Early Florida specimens include those by William Marriott Canby from Hibernia in March 1869 (NY) and by Louis R. Gibbes from Tampa in May 1886 (NY).
