Yucca flaccida has been recognized as a distinct species (Hess & Robbins, FNA, vol. 26; Ward 2006, 2011). A DNA phylogeny placed it (based on a cultivated specimen) as a member of the otherwise fleshy-fruited Aloifolia clade (Ayala-Hernández et al. 2025).
