Often included in Diodia, this species belongs in the genus Hexasepalum, which is closely related to Ernodea and clearly removed from Diodia s.str. (Kirkbride & Delprete 2015; Salas et al. 2015; Cabaña Fader et al. 2016; Florentin et al. 2017). The genus Diodella had sometimes also been used.
