Nyssa biflora Walter
SWAMP TUPELO
**
A recent study regarded N. biflora as a species and that it diverged from N. sylvatica approximately 11-13 million years ago (Zhou et al. 2018). Sometimes viewed as a species, it has also been viewed as a fire-adapted form, similar to what others have observed of fire-adapted, fertile, shrubby forms of Magnolia virginiana (Kurz & Godfrey 1962; Godfrey 1988). Recent studies did not find N. ursina to form a distinct lineage among samples of N. biflora, based on RAD-seq data (Zhou et al. 2018) and 48 nuclear loci (Zhou et al. 2022). The authors afforded subspecific status but made no such combination.
