**
According to Beek & Widrlechner (2021), Rubus argutus is the proper name to represent all members of sect. Arguti characterized by the general lack of stipitate glands, and R. pensilvanicus was misapplied to this group (e.g. by Alice in FNA, vol. 9). Thus, R. pensilvanicus is properly allied with R. allegheniensis (=R. vulpinus), both having short- and long-stipitate glands. And perhaps, R. pensilvanicus is a hybrid progeny involving R. allegheniensis, simply a synonym of it, or synonymous with R. abactus.
