The correct name for this species appears to be Cyperus neochinensis (=Lipocarpha squarrosa). Cyperus aristulatus and C. leptocarpus (=Lipocarpha microcephala) were then both misapplied to this species in Florida (Goetghebeur & Van den Borre 1989; FNA, vol. 23).
