Ilex opaca Aiton var. arenicola (Ashe)Ashe
SCRUB HOLLY
**
Ilex arenicola was published in an August issue in 1924, while I. cumulicola was published in a September issue of the same year. Based on ITS sequence data, Germain-Aubrey et al. (2014) found support for a clade of I. cassine (incl. var. myrtifolia) sister to a clade of I. opaca (incl. var. arenicola). In another study, a specimen identified as I. cumulicola (provenance given as USA, voucher probably at G) was sister to a sample of I. rubra based on nuclear data, and sister to a sample of I. cassine based on plastid data (Manen et al. 2010).
