This species appears to be best placed in Salicornia subg. Amerocornia (Piirainen et al. 2017). The species S. perennis is considered an Old World taxon that was misapplied to American plants (Alonso & Crespo 2008; Guilló et al. 2015; Piirainen et al. 2017).
