Opuntia humifusa

Family:CACTACEAE
Species:Opuntia humifusa (Raf.)Raf.
Common Name:PRICKLYPEAR
Plant Notes:The Opuntia humifusa group has been revised (Majure et al. 2017) but identifying specimens remains a challenge. Opuntia humifusa s.str. (small shrubs, cladodes spineless and not easily disarticulating, areoles usually 4 diagonally at midstem, glochids mostly included in the areole, northeast USA) is not found in Florida. Names relevant to Florida are O. abjecta (small shrubs to treelets in clumps, branching from the base, cladodes easily disarticulating, areoles typically 2-3 diagonally at midstem, spines 0-6 per areole and strongly retrorsely barbed, Florida Keys), O. austrina (treelets or shrubs with a single trunk, cladodes not easily disarticulating, spines 0-3 per areole and sometimes barbed, glochids exserted from the areole, peninsular Florida, =O. ammophila), and O. mesacantha (small shrubs, cladodes somewhat easily disarticulating and 0-5 spines per areole, areoles typically 3 diagonally at midstem, glochids mostly exserted from the areole, southeast USA including most counties in Florida) (Majure et al. 2017).
