Iris hexagona

Family:IRIDACEAE
Species:Iris hexagona Walter
Common Name:DIXIE IRIS; PRAIRIE IRIS
Plant Notes:Henderson (2002) recognizes I. savannarum (leaves bright green and not evergreen, sepal tips more acute to acuminate, capsules 6-10 cm long with 6 winglike ridges) as the widespread species and I. hexagona (leaves yellow-green and evergreen, sepals tips less acute to rounded, capsules 2.5-3.5 cm long and strongly hexagonal) as restricted to SC and FL (Dixie & Taylor Cos.). Data from some microsatellites show the situation may be more complex and tentatively identified a Texas population as I. hexagona s.s. (Meerow et al. 2011).
Status:Native, OBL (DEP), OBL (NWPL)
